Theory of Art

Seeing requires more than the eyes

The individual will be invited on a discovery path. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe has already described in his theory of colours how the intrinsic effect of colours can be grasped.

He characterises for instance, in terms of colour effect, red as urgent. In this way he uses colour to give instructions to the viewer’s mind and thus, viewing becomes a creative activity.

Picasso's works, for example, open up a certain, at that time new way of seeing

This aspect enriches humanity. It is the contribution of every great artist to change vision.

The objectivity of the artwork always includes the subjectivity of the viewer. Only from the interaction between seeing and the image does the image emerge.

One has to learn to accept that there is no (one) reality, but that reality is something that must always arise.
The moment that what is around us connects with our own way of thinking and seeing, reality arises.

Perception

Logical thinking is still valued more in our society than feeling. When we perceive, we usually do not perceive how we should.

If we see well, we forget the eye. Art makes us aware that perception can be an art, because art can make perception artistic.

And artistic means: sharper, more precise, wider, more concrete, closer to the skin, more lively – and all this more and more consciously. This is something for everybody to think about and it would influence the future of mankind and the planet.

So how does art work? Through the senses for the senses. Highest art is the highest form of creating perception – with all its consequences for life.

Art as a value of consciousness and culture

It is always good to be aware that the effect of art does not depend on the understanding of art. You don’t need to know how to breathe to get air.

Art is often wrongly valued: you adorn yourself with precious works of art and hope that they are a valuable asset. This is actually quite an awful thing, because there are the art historians who speak highly of it, there are the art promoters, there is the art market… This is a complex web of value creation.

What always goes unnoticed is the primary experience of art as a value of consciousness and culture.

It is actually a new aspect to take art so seriously that it can show its potential for the further development of perception in the formulated areas of life precisely there where it unfolds completely freely.

Creative powers and artistic skills

Art is not needed to say the right thing. If it is about transferring feelings, artists could save themselves the great effort of producing a work of art. They could say straight away what they mean with words.

To explain it simply: creative powers or rather artistic abilities are created through proximity: through the encounter of man and object, through the encounter of man and phenomenon. Proximity originates through an inquisitive approach, through challenging reflection, through careful observation and perception. Once proximity is established, creativity is right there.

The amount of energy used to approach the object/phenomenon seems to play an important role.
The more focus and concentration is applied, the more power is given back, which is presented in the mysterious combination of creative and artistic impulses. It is always a really important and great moment when a new creation comes into the world in this way.

Whoever wants to know something about me as an artist should look carefully at my pictures and try to recognise there what I am and what I want.
